Channing Tatum Is PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive 2012

Channing Tatum Is PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive 2012He may have bared (almost) all of that incredibly chiseled body in this year’s Magic Mike but 2012′s Sexiest Man Alive Channing Tatum was still modest when he heard the news.

‘Heartthrob of a husband’

“My first thought was, ‘Y’all are messing with me,’” says Tatum, who married actress Jenna Dewan-Tatum in 2009. “I told Jenna after we’d been in the bathtub washing our dogs because they’d gotten skunked.”

Says the actor: “She was like, ‘What?’”

“Yeah, she calls me [the Sexiest Man Alive] now,” he adds. And who can blame her?

Her Alabama-bred heartthrob of a husband is also a sculptor who quotes Edgar Allan Poe, loves to give her massages and can’t wait to start their family. “I’m ready; I think she’s ready,” Tatum, 32, says. “The first number that pops into my head is three, but I just want one to be healthy and then we’ll see where we go after that.”

‘Open-hearted person’

Currently training to play an Olympic athlete in next year’s Foxcatcher, Tatum is all heart and muscle at 195 pounds. “I like to be lean. If I get too bulky I can’t move well and I like to move,” he says. “When I’m not training, I get really round and soft.”

Which is just fine by his wife. “People know him to be fun and sexy, but they don’t know how emotionally deep and spiritually open he is,” says Dewan-Tatum, 31. “He is such an open-hearted person; what you see is what you get.”

We know everybody is cheering for our dear hottie here, but we still gotta ask: Do you think the “Sexiest Man Alive” designation is well-deserved by Channing Tatum? Or did you have another candidate in mind?

Matthew McConaughey Talks About His Extreme Weight Loss

Matthew McConaughey, 42, has become somewhat unrecognizable in recent weeks since losing 30 pounds for his upcoming role in The Dallas Buyer’s Club, the true story of a man with AIDS in the mid-1980s who seeks out experimental HIV drugs to prolong his life.

McConaughey looked extremely thin in photos showing him leaving a church in Austin, Texas, as he appeared to be leaning on his mother for support. If he seems as though he’s somewhat ill, well, that’s part of the point.

“I should not look healthy by the time I’m doing this,” McConaughey told Larry King’s Ora TV web series Larry King Now back in July, when he had lost 15 of the 30 pounds.

“It’s a bit of a spiritual cleanse, mental cleanse,” he told King. And while his pregnant wife has been facing pregnancy cravings, “[I'm] drinking a lot of tea … It takes a while for your body to understand that it has to feed off of itself and that you’re not going to give it something else from the outside.”

For McConaughey, who’s expecting his third child with Camila, it was a major reversal from how he prepared to play a buff stripper in Magic Mike. For that role, he ate five meals a day of only protein and worked out relentlessly.

Did Channing Tatum Steal Another Stripper’s Story For ‘Magic Mike’?

Two ex-male strippers who once worked with Channing Tatum claim his new movie “Magic Mike” is a giant SLAP IN THE FACE … claiming the actor stole THEIR stories and turned it into his own Hollywood gold.

FYI — Tatum doesn’t just star in the film, he’s also a producer — and has claimed the film is partially based on his real-life experiences as a dancer back in Florida. But TMZ spoke to Thomas “Awesome” Austin and London Steele – both guys worked with Tatum back in his FL stripper days — who say the film is based more off their lives than his … even down to the title — “Magic Mike” — which is a name Austin says he coined for another dancer.

‘Awesome’ Austin tells TMZ … he and his former male dance buddies are a like a “brotherhood” and, while they’re happy for Channing’s success, they feel betrayed by the actor for not involving any of them in the film.

They claim they took Tatum under their wings when he was a nobody and taught him all their special stripper-moves like “The Hot Seat” — which is featured in the film and Austin says he invented it. A rep for Channing had no comment.

Channing Tatum As A Stripper In ‘Magic Mike’

Ladies, get your dollar bills out for this one. It’s been established for a while that Channing Tatum used to strip. So it’s only fitting he play the lead in “Magic Mike,” about a male stripper in search for more than just money and lascivious women.

Seemingly out of character, the comedy is directed by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh (“Erin Brockovich,” “Traffic”), in theaters June 29th. Meanwhile, true-to-character, Matthew McConaughey appears shirtless in the newly-released trailer (below) as a strip club owner.

Tatum’s moves are impressive, but I’d expect nothing less: Before he was famous, Tatum worked as a male stripper in Tampa, Florida, when he was 19-years-old. It’s no wonder his dancing is so professional-looking!

Sure the actor is reaching for higher-profile roles in films such as “21 Jump Street” and “The Bitter Pill” (also directed by Soderbergh and starring Rooney Mara, due out next year), but he is more than willing to poke fun at his beefcake persona—as he did earlier in the month when he grind-danced on Elton John during a concert. Co-starring with Channing and all of his bulges are Olivia Munn and Cody Horn.
