Rapper Snoop Dogg Reincarnated As ‘Snoop Lion’ For Reggae Shift

Snoop Dogg says he was “born again” during a visit to Jamaica in January, is changing his name to Snoop Lion and is ready to make music that his “kids and grandparents can listen to.” The artist known for gangster rap is releasing a reggae album called “Reincarnated” in the fall.

Snoop Dogg, who is Calvin Broadus Junior in real life, narrated in a statement that he got the name Snoop Lion from Rastafarian priests during his trip to Jamaica for the documentary Reincarnated.

“I didn’t want to be Snoop Dogg on a reggae track… I wanted to bury Snoop Dogg and become Snoop Lion, but I didn’t know that until I went to the temple and received the name Snoop Lion from the Nyabingi priest,” the rapper said. ”I went to the temple, where the High Priest asked me what my name was, and I said ‘Snoop Dogg’. And he looked me in my eyes and said, ‘No more. You are the light; you are the lion’.”

The West Coast rapper held a news conference in New York on Monday. Later he played five songs for a small crowd, including one called “No Guns Allowed.” It features his daughter.

The album will be followed with a documentary of the same name. It features him making music and will include some personal elements of his life, a producer of the film said. It will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Does the new name “Snoop Lion” suit the veteran rapper Snoop Dogg? Will you be supporting his shift from rap to reggae?

‘Jeffersons’ Star Sherman Hemsley Dies At 74

Sherman Hemsley, the hot-tempered, upwardly mobile, janitor-turned-dry-cleaner-owner George Jefferson in TV’s iconicThe Jeffersons, has died at 74. Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas, police say. A cause of death was not immediately known.

The actor, who first played the role in All in the Family – going head to bigoted head with Carroll O’Connor’s Archie Bunker – went on to embody a softer character, Deacon Ernest Frye on TV’s Amen. Born in South Philadelphia, Hemsley dropped out of high school to join the Air Force. He returned to Philadelphia and worked for the U.S. Postal Service, while taking acting classes at night. After performing with local groups in Philadelphia, Hemsley moved to New York to make his Broadway debut as Gitlow in Purlie.

While touring with the production, television writer and producer Lear contacted Hemsley to play the role of Jefferson on his new sitcom, All in the Family. Hemsley hesitated to accept but Lear held the role open for him and two years later, Hemsley joined the cast. Less than two years after Hemsley made his television debut, he and All in the Family costar Isabel Sanford were given their own spin-off in The Jeffersons. The series earned Hemsley Emmy and Golden Globe nominations in 1984 and 1985 respectively.

In 1986, Hemsley was cast as Deacon Ernest Frye in the NBC series, Amen. The role would last five seasons, ending in 1991. Although he retired from television acting, Hemsley joined Sanford through the late ’90s and early 2000′s to reprise their roles as George and Louise “Weezy” Jefferson on guest spots. Hemsley had no wife or children.

Anderson Cooper: I’m Gay And Happy

Anderson Cooper has confirmed what most people in the media world and New York already knew: He is gay.

“The fact is, I’m gay,” Cooper wrote in an email to Daily Beast blogger Andrew Sullivan. “Always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”

Sullivan, who is gay and is a longtime friend of Cooper’s, had asked the CNN anchor for his reaction to a recent Entertainment Weekly story—”The New Art of Coming Out”—which was, in part, about the importance of gay celebrities coming out of the closet to combat America’s bullying epidemic.

Cooper answered: “Even though my job puts me in the public eye, I have tried to maintain some level of privacy in my life… But I’ve also wanted to retain some privacy for professional reasons. Since I started as a reporter in war zones 20 years ago, I’ve often found myself in some very dangerous places. For my safety and the safety of those I work with, I try to blend in as much as possible, and prefer to stick to my job of telling other people’s stories, and not my own…”

In 2007, Out magazine put Cooper on its list of the 50 most powerful gays. In 2011, Cooper gave a winking nod to his homosexuality during a panel discussion with writers from The Onion. And last month, Cooper was among the celebrities featured in a New York Observer cover story on “the glass closet.”

“In a perfect world, I don’t think it’s anyone else’s business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted,” Cooper—who says he’s always been open with family and friends—added in his email. “Visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter’s shield of privacy.”

Katie Holmes Divorces Tom Cruise — Scientology To Blame?

Last week, Tom Cruise took daughter Suri and son Connor to an awards ceremony in New York. Meanwhile, Katie Holmes was on the other side of the planet in Taiwan. The official reason was to promote an ice skating event. Now that Holmes filed for divorce on Friday, according to People, Holmes’ Taiwan trip seems more like a warning sign than anything else.

In recent months, the couple was rarely photographed together, even when the two were in the same city. What has been spotlighted, particularly in the Daily Mail, is Holmes’ recent style. The usually impeccably dressed actress has been photographed looking like, well, a down-to-earth mom. Untucked button-downs, jeans, loosely wet knotted hair — none of which would raise alarm bells unless you were a superstar known for a meticulously managed makeover since her marriage began more than five years ago.

One stressor on the relationship could stem from Cruise’s devotion to Scientology — it’s long been blamed for his split from Nicole Kidman – and the serious allegations of his mistreatment of lower-ranked members of the religious group, as this New Yorker article pointed out.

If Holmes thought her marriage to a superstar would be a boon to her career, she was wrong. Since their union began about six years ago, her professional life has taken a backseat to being a wife and mother. That may have been her choosing, but a recent interview with Cruise in Playboy suggests an unsettled Holmes, who wanted more from her career than just being known as a superstar’s wife.

It’s something Cruise’s second ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, was all too familiar with. When asked in an interview with Vanity Fair whether women could have both marriage and career, she said of her marriage to Cruise: “I think I had to choose. I think (the marriage) would have come down to it. I suppose it wasn’t meant to be.”

What do you think is the real reason why Katie Holmes decided to file for divorce from Tom Cruise? Ladies, would YOU date Tom Cruise despite all the Scientology stuff?

Justin Bieber Suffers Concussion After Paris Performance

Canadian pop star Justin Bieber ran headlong into trouble on a European promotional tour on Thursday, knocking himself out backstage in Paris and dealing with a crushing crowd in Norway that left some fans injured one day earlier.

Thursday’s incident occurred after the singer fell into a glass wall during an intimate concert in Paris. Bieber told celebrity news website TMZ.com he felt lightheaded but was able to perform his last song before going backstage and passing out for 15 seconds.

The concussion comes one day after Bieber, on a brief tour of major European cities to promote upcoming album “Believe,” was met with a crush of fans before a free concert in Oslo leading to reports of dozens of young girls being injured. Bieber performed a free, six-song concert at the Oslo Opera House on Wednesday that is planned to be featured on his upcoming one-hour NBC television special to be aired next month.

TMZ said 49 young girls were injured and 14 taken to hospitals, and police came close to declaring a state of emergency in the capital. Those reports could not be immediately confirmed.

This is not the first time Bieber fever has caused crowd control and safety issues. In November 2009, fans stampeded a shopping mall in Long Island, New York ahead of an appearance by the pop star, forcing organizers to cancel the event. Bieber’s manager was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance, but the charges were later dropped.

Janet Jackson: I Don’t Weigh Myself

After years of yo-yo dieting, Janet Jackson is finally at the size she wants to be. Just don’t ask her how many pounds she’s dropped.

“I don’t know how much weight I’ve lost, only because I stay away from the scale,” Jackson told PEOPLE at Marco Glavianos “Supermodels” exhibit in New York recently. ”I don’t think [stepping on the scale] is healthy. You’re setting yourself up to fail and women’s bodies fluctuate every month – certain time of the month in particular – we bloat a great deal,” she says.

This time around, Jackson – who turns 46 on Wednesday – is battling the bulge with NutriSystem. She became the company’s spokeswoman in December. The singer adds that she isn’t depriving herself of her favorite foods – whether they’re on the plan or not. Still, it’s not just watching what she eats that helps her maintain. “If I’m getting ready for something like a tour, I work out six days a week. I like to switch it up. I may go for a run or bike,” she says.

As for whether she’s reached her goals, Jackson says, “I’m really happy with the way that I feel at the moment. I feel very good, and it’s been a long time since I’ve felt this good.”

John Travolta Case: More Accusers On The Rise?

As evidence arises that may contradict one victim’s claims, other men have reached out to a lawyer who filed a lawsuit accusing actor John Travolta of sexual battery and harassment, the attorney tells PEOPLE.

Two masseurs listed only under the name John Doe accuse Travolta, 58, of improper behavior during massage sessions, according to the complaint filed in Los Angeles by the Pasadena-based attorney. Okorie Okorocha says the men “never wanted this attention” and “wanted to keep this discreet,” but a month of negotiations with Travolta’s attorneys went nowhere. “They left us with no other option but to file the lawsuit,” he says.

Travolta’s high-powered attorney Martin Singer, whose Hollywood A-list client list has included Charlie Sheen, Demi Moore, Nicolas Cage, Eddie Murphy and Arnold Schwarzenegger, among others, strongly denies the allegations, calling them “absurd and ridiculous.”

Singer provided PEOPLE a photograph and a Mr. Chow restaurant receipt that purportedly shows that Travolta was in New York on Jan. 16, 2012 – the day the first accuser claims he was assaulted while giving Travolta a massage in a Beverly Hills hotel. TMZ first reported on the photograph and restaurant receipt. And the restaurant’s manager confirms to PEOPLE: “Yes, Mr Travolta came in for dinner to Mr Chow Tribeca on Jan. 16, 2012.”

As for allegations by the second accuser that an assault took place during a massage in Atlanta, Singer says, “It is obvious that he checked media reports that my client was in Atlanta working on a movie.”

Maybe the accusers should finally reveal their true identities, if they are not fictitious characters at all — what do you think?

‘The Band’ Singer Levon Helm Dies At 71

Levon Helm, the drummer, multi-instrumentalist and singer for The Band who kept the band’s heart for more than three decades, died “peacefully” Thursday afternoon, according to his record label, Vanguard Records. He was 71.

A statement from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted Helm in 1994, called him the backbone of The Band. Helm had a voice unlike any other in rock music: definitively Southern, soulful and gritty, an oak-barreled whiskey that sometimes went down with a fiery kick. It was an American voice. Helm had been suffering from throat cancer. Despite reducing his voice to a rasp in recent years, it had not robbed him of his spirit.

At his home in Woodstock, New York, he regularly hosted the Midnight Ramble, weekly concerts that attracted sell-out crowds and all-star support from the likes of Emmylou Harris, Kris Kristofferson and Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen. In the past decade, he recorded two albums, 2007′s “Dirt Farmer” and 2009′s “Electric Dirt,” that won Grammys. And he occasionally took the show on the road, making appearances at Tennessee’s Bonnaroo, the Newport Folk Festival and Los Angeles’ Greek Theater.

After the Band’s split, Helm recorded a handful of solo albums and toured with his old bandmates, minus Robertson. There were losses there, too: Manuel committed suicide in 1986, and Danko passed away in 1999. Helm occasionally played with other groups, notably Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band. He also appeared in several movies, the best remembered of which is “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” which won Sissy Spacek an Oscar for her portrayal of country star Loretta Lynn.

Helm had some hard times in the late ’90s. His studio was hit with a fire. The throat cancer took his voice and medical bills threatened his house. He nearly declared bankruptcy. But the Ramble, intended as a one-off “rent party,” according to Helm, helped raise money and revived his career. Indeed, it seemed there was nothing he enjoyed more than playing music for a few friends. In 2008, Helm received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award with The Band. He wasn’t present to receive it. He held a Midnight Ramble in Woodstock instead.
