According to a recent poll, President Barack Obama holds a wide lead over possible Republican rivals for the presidential election in 2012. However, the poll also showed that the American people have serious doubts about his handling of the U.S. economy. Obama had inherited a global recession and has had trouble recovering the U.S. economy. He has had some success with employment, but the cost of living has continued to rise under his watch.
The poll also revealed that the president received a h uge boost after the killing of Al Qaeda terrorist Osama bin Laden. The poll showed that 45 percent of Americans believe that President Obama will win the re-election. That number is an improvement from the last poll conducted in November 2010 Congressional elections that only had 35 percent believing he would win the re-election.
The survey was an indication of how hard it will be for the Republicans to unseat the incumbent President of the United States. However, pollsters claim that the margin may thin when the re-election nears and challengers will get a chance to be heard. Most people do not know about the challenging candidates and are more likely to support someone that they already know. As the campaign begins to shape up, candidates will get a chance to change people’s minds.
The field of possible Republican candidates has not generated much support in the early months of 2011, with several candidates still waiting to announce their candidacy. Obama, who made history in 2008 by becoming the country’s first black president, holds dominating double digit leads over most of the Republican candidates.
According to the survey, Obama polled above 50 percent when compared to his closest Republican rivals, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. Obama leads Romney 51 percent to 38 percent and leads Huckabee 51 percent to 39 percent. The recent poll also showed that he received a 3 point increase after the bin Laden assassination but other polls have him gaining one or two more points.
The poll also showed that Obama has not warmed Americans towards his handling of the U.S. economy. Only 34 percent of Americans approve of his handling of the economy, which may be linked to the recent hike in gasoline prices. The low approval rate for his grasp on the economy is the lowest approval rate that Obama has received since taking office. The economy and the employment status may be the determining factor on whether or not Obama will be re-elected.
