Friendster is known as among the very first social networking sites in the internet. But after being online for 9 years, the website announced that it can no longer compete with social networking giant, Facebook. Friendster sold its site to MOL or Money Online, a Malaysian company that owns the rights to the Berjaya group. The company plans to make changes to the website, although it would give appropriate time for the users to export their files.
Last week, Friendster sent an email to all of its users, urging them to export all files, pictures, and blogs in their accounts by May 31 of this year. After that date, all information in the Friendster database will be erased and deleted. This move has been necessary as the website plans to shift its focus from social networking into complimentary gaming.
Friendster announced that it will not be relinquishing its name but will offer services such as music and gaming in complement to the millions of facebook users. Friendster has offered their help to their users, creating tools that would help users easily export their files from the website. Photos can be exported into other photo websites such as Flickr and Multiply.
As for the actual accounts, which contains sentimental information such as comments, testimonials and other text based content; Friendster created a tool that would allow their users to save their information into PDF files that can be viewed just as they were presented in the website. Although Friendster may be among the first social networking website, it was not able to survive the stiff competition from Facebook.
Friendster was founded in 2002 by computer programmers Jonathan Abrams and Peter Chin. It opened up the doors for social websites such as Myspace and Facebook. In the first few months of the website’s launch, it had garnered over three million members. The success of Friendster as a social networking website inspired the creation of other social networking websites.
But in the past few years, the social networking market had been dominated by Facebook. As of March of this year more than 54 percent of all social networking users are registered to Facebook, or the equivalent of over 640 million users all over the world. Friendster has fallen in the wayside since the rise of facebook but had found its market in Southeast Asia. However, pressure from advertisers and the dominance of facebook has forced Friendster to fold.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
