The weekend before the Cannes Film festival in France saw the arrival of several stars and celebrities who are excited to see the films at the annual gathering. The 64th Cannes Film Fest will open on Wednesday with the premiere of Woody Allen’s newest romantic comedy “Midnight in Paris”. Despite the debut in the festival, his film will not be part of the official competition in Cannes. Tour Paris with a .
There will be 20 other films in the competition including films by acclaimed film makers from all over the world. In the competition will be Pedro Almodovar from Spain, Lars Von Trier from Denmark and Belgium’s Dardenne brothers. They will all be vying for the festival’s coveted Palme d’Or, the highest prize given to the director of the festival’s best film.
“The films that are selected must really give the feeling that they deserve to be here,” said festival director Thierry Fremaux in an interview with the press, explaining how it can be tough to whittle down the selection.”The festival reflects the state of cinema and in general, the state of cinema speaks to the state of the world.” he added.
Since its inception at the end of World War II, the film festival has been known for its controversies, but Fremaux expects this year’s festival to be controversy-free and that this year’s selection will be the best-received ever. The city of Cannes nearly triples in population to 200,000 during the 11-day film festival. Most of the people are there to support the films, but there is also a large group of studio representatives from all over the world who are there to haggle over the rights of the 4,000 films there.
Award winning actor Robert De Niro, who himself starred in two Palme d’Or films (“Taxi” and “The Mission”) will be leading the jury for the competition. The star studded jury includes Hollywood actors Uma Thurman and Jude Law, as well as Hong Kong director Johnny To and film producer Shi Nansun and French director, Olivier Assayas.
Among the A-list celebrities who appeared in the French city includes power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, Penelope Cruz, and Catherine Deneuve. Each of these high profile celebrities will take turns on the red carpet that leads up to the Palais des Festivals.
