Abortion Doctor Kermit Gosnell May Face Death Penalty For Murdering Infants

Abortion Doctor Kermit Gosnell May Face Death Penalty For Murdering InfantsDr. Kermit Gosnell, 72, was convicted of first-degree murder and could face execution in the deaths of three babies who authorities say were delivered alive and then killed with scissors at his grimy clinic, in a case that became a flashpoint in the nation’s debate over abortion.

‘Babies who were still moving’

Gosnell was cleared in the death of a fourth baby, who prosecutors say let out a soft whimper before he snipped its neck. Gosnell was also found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the drug-overdose death of a patient who had undergone an abortion.

Former clinic employees testified that Gosnell routinely performed illegal late-term abortions past Pennsylvania’s 24-week limit, that he delivered babies who were still moving, whimpering or breathing, and that he and his assistants “snipped” the newborns’ spines, as he referred to it.

‘Thousands of abortions’

Prosecution experts said one was nearly 30 weeks along when it was aborted, and it was so big that Gosnell allegedly joked it could “walk to the bus.” A second fetus was said to be alive for some 20 minutes before a clinic worker snipped its neck. A third was born in a toilet and was moving before another clinic employee grabbed it and severed its spinal cord, according to testimony. Baby E let out a soft whimper before Gosnell cut its neck, the jury was told; Gosnell was acquitted in that baby’s death.

Gosnell’s attorney, Jack McMahon, argued that none of the fetuses was born alive and that any movements were posthumous twitching or spasms. He performed thousands of abortions over a 30-year career.

Firearms Manufacturer Cuts Off Sales To New York Over Gun Restrictions

Firearms Manufacturer Cuts Off Sales To New York Over Gun RestrictionsOlympic Arms, a manufacturer of semiautomatic rifles and AR-15-style firearms, announced Tuesday it will no longer be doing business in New York as a result of the state’s new ban on assault-style weapons, according to the Times Union.

‘Exceeds the authority granted’

The company explained its decision in a post on its Facebook page: “Legislation recently passed in the State of New York outlaws the AR15 and many other firearms, and will make it illegal for the good and free citizens of New York to own a large selection of legal and safe firearms and magazines. We feel as though the passage of this legislation exceeds the authority granted to the government of New York by its citizens, and violates the Constitution of the United States.”

‘Misdemeanor charge’

New York Gov. Cuomo last month signed into law tough legislation aimed at strengthening state laws on assault weapons, gun-magazine capacity and reporting potential harmful behavior. Though the law allows law enforcement agencies to purchase assault-style weapons, Olympic says it will no longer serve the state’s first responders.

The law also restricts ammunition magazines from 10 to seven bullets and current owners of higher-capacity magazines have a year to sell them out of state. An owner caught at home with eight or more bullets in a magazine could face a misdemeanor charge. Cuomo cited the December killings of 20 first-graders and six educators at a Connecticut elementary school as one of his motivations for pushing the gun legislation.
